In a search of the web today I discovered a terrific web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~uslookup/census.html It's called "Census Central" and lists the states (all) and counties (not near all) with the volunteer(s) who will do free census look-ups. Lots of counties have their entire transcribed censuses online, and those links are right there in Census Central. Unfortunately, the only Fulton County, IL, censuses available for look-ups are 1820 and 1850. Is there anyone out there who could volunteer to do look-ups for the other Fulton County census years? If so, just go to the site; it's easy to volunteer. Bad news. I'm mad about what's happening to the on-line census image project. Several months ago I read that three servces, Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, and Hertage Quest, were coming out with ALL the 1790 to 1920 census images ON LINE. I read a review somewhere which compared the three and declared that Heritage Quest was doing the best, most thorough job and would cost the most (as I recall, about $150/yr was projected). All three were due out this spring (2001). Today I learned that Heritage Quest has given up and will not be offering census images on line. Instead, we can buy their expensive CDs. Ancestry.com has published its 1910 images on line, but it cannot be accessed by Macintosh computers. (They have knuckled under to Bill Gates and his evil empire.) Genealogy.com is going ahead with its census image project, but it is terribly expensive: a subscription costs $59.99 for the 1900 census for four states, and it will take 34 more subscriptions at, I presume, $59.99 each to complete just 1900. Is there anyone out there who has anything encouraging to say about the on-line census project? Thanks for listening to me let off steam. This would have probably been in the 1920s & 1930s. I'm trying to locate the address somehow.
