Outlet number 5 (less one acre west end) of a plat of the southwest quarter of section two (2) in township eight (8) north of range four (4) east of the north principal meridian as recorded in Vol. 66 on page 95 of Land Records and more particularly described as a portion of said southwest quarter of section two., commencing at the southeast corner of said quarter; thence north eight and eleventh one hundredths (8 11.-100) chains to a stone in the public road; thence west along said road eleven and fifty eight one hundredths (11 58.100) chains to a stone at the intersection of two roads; hence in a south easterly direction along the public road fourteen and nine one hundredths (14 –9-100) chains to the place beginning ; except one acre off the west end of said described land. DRAPER 2/9/1868 ---------------------------------------------------------------- City - County News We learn from the county treasurer that Dennis BARK collector of Deerfield Township made settlement with the treasurer in full on Wednesday the 7th inst. This is the first settlement made this year. Buffalo Robes, Lap Robes and Horse Blankets also a lot of superior Oak Tanned Belting and Lace Leather at BLACKADORE’S. The case of Geo NAGAL for selling liquor without a government lisence was continued and George returned from Springfield on Friday last. Thomas KNEAVES plead guilty and was fined the lowest amount under the law $10 and costs. A few months since T.M. MORSE of Fairview Township in company of several other persons went down into Texas. We learn that the family of Mr. MORSE has heard nothing from him for the last two months unless a tiding has been received in the past week and fears are entertained for his safety. ROSE arrested for robbing the mail at Norris in this county and who quietly slipped out of the court during his trial at the former session of the United States district court at Springfield and was afterwards rearrested was convicted on Tuesday last and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary. John W. RAYS is the heat artist in the city. The firm of SAWYER and Co. jewelry has been dissolved as will be seen by advertisement. Farmers will find it to their interest to call on Bearley’s Mills before selling their wheat. Accident- On Monday last as Frank ROWLAND was working with the [] at the Woolen Mill, he had the end of one of his fingers taken off with the knives. Lewistown Union 7th The trotting stallion Bashaw has been purchased by A.F. FAYETTE, late owner of [D**tar] for $15,080, the horse weighs 1,000 pounds and was sold by David KELLY at the novel price of $14.50 a pound. The Princeton Patriot says the C B & Q railroad company are about to abolish the use of coal oil lamps in their cars and will here after use candles. The many recent disasters from kerosene is the cause. A number of the railroad hands at Spoon River not satisfied with the wages [? offered] by the contractor left there and on the* to Canton and tried to get work here; wages being 25 cents a day higher. Four or five of the men employed here were discharged on Saturday for drunkenness. On Monday these men [illeg] large quantities of tangle[] and in the afternoon had a quarrel and fight with a six-footer from Banner Township, in which a club was used, blows struck, hair pulled. Now four to one was unique but they were to drunk to do much harm. Where did they get their whiskey? The Episcopal Methodist Society of Cuba in this county are taking steps to build a house of worship at that place. Already $2,000 has been subscribed for that purpose. They expect to put up a building worth several thousand dollars. Geo. TYLER has removed his dental office to rooms over Sawyer & Co.’s jewelry store-southwest corner of the square. Sheridan is a new town on the new railroad between Bushnell and Warsaw. Our old friend and chum, Billy HANOVER formerly of Canton is trading in grain, pork and such…Success attend him. John HENSLEY of Cedar Township, Knox County took the premium for the best 40 acres of corn raised in that county. His average per acre was over 86 bushels. William DANIEL age 101 has just died in Fayette County ILL. His sister age 100 morns his loss. Wm. PROCTOR of Lewistown has given $2,000 to the Presbyterian Technological Seminary of the Northwest at Chicago. Donations to the Canton High School Cabinet and Library: Indian Tomahawk by Mr. John REEVES, Red Sandstone from the [illeg.] and soapstone from Marquette and Copper Ore from Portage Harbor by Miss Junie MCCALL; Fossil Shells from Miss Mattie PRESTON; Turtle Stone, sand and [illge.] [illge] and a book entitled “Faith and Patience by Charles SYNDER; and “ The Golden Rule” by Miss Carrie INGERSOLL. We learn that on Saturday last, the wife of George M. GR[?]W living near Lewistown attempted to commit suicide by twice stabbing herself in the region of the heart with a pair of shears or scissors and she also cut her throat. We have not learned all of the particulars but understand she was thought to be insane from some troubles. Infant Mortality- The only child of Mr. DAWDY of Maquon died suddenly during the night of January 30th. He was a healthy active boy eight months old. He had had a slight cold but, not enough to cause [illge] in the minds of his parents, who had been much alarmed by the sudden death of children in the neighborhood. In the morning the mother found her child lying quietly on her arm. She thought her usually wide-awake baby very still, looked more closely and then listened for its breath. In the dead of silence of the night the little spirit had without warning went to his eternal rest.
