On Saturday last, our good Democratic friend Mr. Isaac C. JOHNSON of Canton Township presented us with a nice young goose to which we did ample justice on New Year’s Day. Mr. JOHNSON is one of the old settlers of this country, and by industry and perseverance has amassed sufficient of this world’s goods to enable him to enjoy his old days in ease and comfort. Our old friend A.M. SWAN is making good headway with his “History of Canton”. He has already secured sale of about 400 books and promise of many more. He is collecting matters of interest connected with the early history of the town and people and we have no doubt from acquaintances of the author and its surroundings that the book will be very interesting. Prof. COOK of Lewistown has furnished the papers of that place with a report of the schools of that town from which we gather that the: Total number of pupils enrolled 405 Average number of pupils enrolled 329 Average daily attendance 328.3 Percentage of attendance 95.3 Percentage on punctuality 94.2 Total number of tardiness 756 New Bell- The new bell for the fire department arrived on Saturday last and has been place on the engine house. It weighs 1,288 pounds and cost $515.20 at the Foundry in Troy, New York. The hanging cost $55. Freight and drayage cost $31.80. It is a fire alarm and can be heard at a great distance. Portions of 6 and 7 Cass Township are on the west side of Spoon River and have been included in Harris Township. Application will be made at the next meeting of the Board of Supervisors to have them set back to Cass. Large Hog- Daniel HITCHCOCK of Akron this morning brought in a hog that weighs 800 pounds; it was under 11 months old. Can any of our contemporaries beat this? The animal was from the MOORE stock of Canton. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Peoria Review OUR SCRAP BAG There was a ball in Mershbon’s Hall, Vermont on Thursday the 29th ult… Rufus PORTER of Lewistown attended the late Beekeeper’s Association at Indianapolis… Sheriff PRICHARD, accompanied by Maj. KAUFFMAN, Referee On Tuesday night a wheel on the mail car on the passenger train going north broke down and caused the train to run off the track. In consequence of this the mail did not make it here until evening as there was no car to bring it in. ------------------------------------------------------------------ SAD ACCIDENT AT FARMINGTON We learn from Mr. S. FOUNTAIN of Farmington who was on the train that on Wednesday morning the train south ran into the team of Dr. VAN PATTEN an old man and for many years a prominent citizen of Trivoli Township, and injuring him so severely it is thought he cannot survive. The accident occurred at the crossing near the bridge just south of Farmington. Mr. VAN PATTEN probably did not hear the train and when he discovered it was to late to check the train, although the engineer whistled down the brakes and tried to stop. The team was a span of mules attached to a large wagon. The mules had crossed the track and the wagon was directly across the track when the locomotive struck it. The mules were thrown but apparently not injured. The wagon was cut in two, one part on one side and the other part thrown on the other side of the track. Mr. VAN PATTEN was thrown on the pilot and was carried several hundred yards before the train could be stopped. He was found to be very crushed and mangled about the body, one arm broken, and doubtless injured internally and to much an extent that it was thought he could not recover. We learn that the mill at the bridge, owned by Griffin & Marchant, was about being removed to Trivoli- that on Wednesday a number of teams were to come from Trivoli to take up the machinery of the mill. Mr. VAN PATTEN, who was one largely interested in securing the removal of the mill, had come down with his team to take up a load and met with the accident as we have stated above. It is a very sad affair as Mr. VAN PATTEN was on of the leading citizens of Trivoli and a man highly esteemed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ House Burned- Loss of Life Joshua Township was destroyed by fire. How the fire occurred we have not learned, but suppose it to have been caused by the stove or the flue. The family was not aroused until to late to save anything, but all escaped in their night clothes, except a little son about 12 years of age, who sad to relate burned to death. The house a one and a half story frame was, owned by Daniel Y. MILLER, was nearly new and was insured in C.T. Herald’s agency for $250. P.S.- We learn from Mr. MILLER, that an uncle of the boy was sleeping upstairs with him and was first aroused. He did not wake the boy, but left him sleeping, ran down the stairs and aroused those of the family below, and thought to put out the flames. But, they had too much headway. Hearing the cries of the boy the father placed a ladder against the house and tried to save him, but on breaking in the window the flames burst out and caused him to descend. His hands were burnt in the attempt. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Married: WHITE-ABBOTT On Saturday last January 1, 1871 by the Rev.
